Joshua Tree National Park is a large public land (nearly 800,000 acres) characterized by two deserts--the Colorado Desert to the east and the higher, cooler, and wetter Mojave Desert to the west. The Mojave is the habitat of the iconic Joshua Tree. Its gnarled, twisted appearance is sometimes called grotesque but has been a useful natural resource of materials over the years for the early Pinto culture and later settlers.
