During the era of western expansion the ocean was the highway and lighthouses the road signs. Like a milepost in the darkness, the 8 ½ foot tall Fresnel lens of Yaquina Head Lighthouse, located at the top of the 93 foot tower, was one link in a chain of coastal lights that dotted the Northwest coast. Built approx. 40 miles apart, these lighthouses opened the Pacific Ocean to nighttime traffic.
