Challenger Point, while not an "official" Colorado 14er, is notable for honoring the memory of the crew of space shuttle Challenger which failed during its launch on January, 28, 1986. Alan Silverstein and party placed a bronze plaque at the summit on July 19, 1987, bearing the following inscription:
CHALLENGER POINT 14,080+ Feet
In Memory of the Crew of Shuttle Challenger Seven who died accepting the risk, expanding Mankind's horizons January 28, 1986 Ad Astra Per Aspera* *Translated: To the stars through adversity."
